Fordite (Detroit Agate) – Material Description

Fordite, often called "Detroit Agate," is one of the most unique man-made materials used in fine craftsmanship. Unlike natural stone, Fordite was created during the golden age of the American automotive industry when layers of automotive paint accumulated on factory paint racks. Over decades, thousands of ultra-thin coats of paint were baked repeatedly in industrial ovens, forming dense, colorful layers that were later cut and polished to reveal spectacular flowing patterns.

Every piece of Fordite is completely unique, displaying vibrant ribbons of color that resemble natural agate while preserving a piece of automotive history. Since modern automotive painting processes no longer produce Fordite, the material is finite and increasingly rare, making each finished piece highly collectible.

At Santa Fe Stoneworks, Fordite is precision-cut and hand-finished to showcase its remarkable color, depth, and history—transforming a piece of America's industrial heritage into functional art.

Steel Type

The blade steel type is high alloy stainless Damascus steel. Since this is a solid high quality steel type there is no need for harder core steel. Core steel is required in most industrially manufactured Damascus blades. Instead, this blade is precision CNC full flat grind from a solid bar of beautiful high alloy Damascus steel.
The two steel types that make up the Small Rose Pattern of the blade are 440C and N690 high alloy.
